Donations Management, How to Prevent the Second Disaster

When disaster strikes, large or small, the community wants to help. They first seek to respond by donating bags of used clothing and other items thinking the victims will use them. Some emergency mangers even broadcast to the public to bring whatever they can. Thus, the second disaster of piles of used stuff to be sorted inventoried, dispersed or dumped. This presentation explains who manages and how donations are managed and how to avoid the second disaster of piles unsolicited donations.

About the Presenter

Larry Mays is the Disaster Response Coordinator for the North Pacific Region of Adventist Community Services which covers FEMA Region 10 and Montana, (of region 8). He is responsible for training volunteers in donations operations and coordinating response when ACS is requested to activate to assist in disaster donations operations. He has served in this capacity for thirteen years.
