The Generational Jive – How to Better Communicate Across Generations within the Emergency Management and Public Health Workforce

Have you ever had a conversation with a younger or older colleague that didn’t go as planned? Have you felt tension in the workplace due to generational miscommunication? Come, engage, and learn during this interactive presentation exploring how to effectively communicate and lead between generations in an emergency management and public health setting. Our discussion includes generational definitions and defining moments, examinations of historical events and how they influence generational communication styles and preferences, how to identify and engage with varying generational communication tendencies, and how to bring back tangible actions that can implemented to increase effective inter-generational communication.

About the Presenters

Kristina Hansen, BS, LMP, PCP, MSOL(c):
Kristina Hansen (she/her) has over 22 years of experience in the public health field with the majority of her career spent in public health emergency preparedness and healthcare preparedness programs. Kris has responded to federally and state declared disasters Minnesota, Oregon, and Washington. Currently, Kris serves Washington State as the Healthcare Preparedness Administrator for the Executive Office of Resiliency and Health Security with the Department of Health.

Stephanie Schreiber, BA, MPH:
Stephanie Schreiber (she/her) is an Emergency Response Planner in the Executive Office of Resiliency and Health Security for Washington State’s Department of Health. Stephanie has undergraduate degrees in Environmental Studies and Global Studies (Development and Social Justice) from Pacific Lutheran University and received her Master of Public Health from George Washington University. Stephanie is a Millennial who lives in Sparks, Nevada with her dashing husband, precocious toddler son, and adorable golden retriever.
