NOAA Weather Radio

2025 marks the 50th anniversary of President Gerald Ford designating NOAA Weather Radio “America’s Official Federal Warning System”, which it still is.  The network’s 1,036 transmitters provide alerts for both weather and man-made emergencies, including a recent hazardous gas emergency in Georgia, and numerous civil emergencies created by Hurricane Helene.  FEMA grant funding will pay for up to 75% of the cost of weather radios, with “in-kind services” covering the remaining 25%.  More affordable and effective than outdoor sirens, and easily obtained, weather radios work when electricity and cell towers fail.  Learn how Emergency Managers can leverage the “Voice of the National Weather Service” to save lives and protect property, without blowing their budgets.

Bruce Jones

Since 1976, Bruce Jones has been advocating on behalf of the NOAA Weather Radio Network.  During 34 years on TV and radio in Tornado Alley, he encouraged everyone to get a weather radio and rely on it as a first-line early warning device for homes, schools, and businesses. In 2007 he won a Congressional “Mark Trail Award” for outstanding advocacy. For the past 17 years Bruce has been an official spokesperson for Midland Radio Corporation, a weather radio manufacturer. In that capacity he works with NWS, EM’s, media, retailers, NGO’s and VOADs to spread the word: NOAA Weather Radio Saves Lives!
